Volunteering

Volunteering with WabiSabi is the ultimate form of recycling. Community members give of their time, and through us, that energy is reflected back into the community, helping it to thrive.

As another example of the strength and supportiveness of our community, WabiSabi enjoys a thriving volunteer program. In fact, the Utah Commission on Volunteers awarded WabiSabi the "2005 Nonprofit Volunteer Program of the Year." This award, given by the Utah Lieutenant Governor's office, exemplifies exceptional volunteer management practices.

volunteersWabiSabi is grateful for the support of dozens of volunteers who donate their time, energy and enthusiasm to our organization. It is with their help that we are able to fulfill our mission. Each year, volunteers log over 1000 hours at our stores alone. This doesn’t include all the volunteers that help with our other programs, including the annual fashion show, our free Hands Up meals, the Kids Art Tent, and more.

There are many volunteer opportunities available at WabiSabi, from helping at our two retail locations, to offering up time and talents in our community workshops, and even modeling in our annual Mardi Gras Fashion Show. In addition to this, we’re always in search of people travelling to Salt Lake City or Grand Junction who can drop off donations at The Road Home and Salvation Army. Stop by the Warehouse to collect the items and get directions.

We also accept assistance from those in need of community service hours. Visit our Warehouse location for details.

From our pool of stellar volunteers, however, there are a few “all-stars” that stand out. These people aren’t on the payroll, but they are essential to WabiSabi surviving and thriving.

Gary
garyWe see Gary on a daily basis. He tests our electronics, runs the registers, staffs the stores during WabiSabi meetings, and brings us gifts of doughnuts on Sundays. Seeing Gary’s smiling face each day is a reminder of the kind of selfless generosity that makes WabiSabi a success and Moab a beautiful place to live. Gary’s greatest donation to WabiSabi is his heart, and for that, we will always be grateful.

Eva Lou
Ever wonder what happens to all those votes you cast at WabiSabi for your favorite organizations? The bins of ballots end up in Eva Lou’s capable hands where they are tallied and our financial gifts are determined. Eva Lou also records WabiSabi’s vital statistics like volunteer hours and the passage of donations into and out of our stores. She is the one who can quantify – numerically and financially – the positive impact WabiSabi has on our community. When one adds in all the hours she’s logged helping out at our stores over the years as well, we can’t possibly begin to quantify – numerically, financially or in measures of the heart – the positive impact she has on us.

Craig
craigFrom serving on our board to attending to our server, Craig is essential to WabiSabi’s success in the 21st century. He’s Mr. Fix-It with our computers and acts as the website guru. In fact, if it weren’t for him, you wouldn’t be reading this right now. Our online presence is entirely due to him. Craig’s dedication to WabiSabi over the years has been phenomenal, and the occasional pizza he delivers here just makes us appreciate him all the more.

Lannie
Lannie’s engagement with the “Hands Up Brunches” predates WabiSabi’s involvement in the community meal effort. However, from the moment we took on the cause, he’s been our most valuable volunteer. Every meal, every year – from our brunches to our holiday dinners – Lannie is selflessly present to set up and serve, cook and clean. He sustains the meals that we put on to sustain our community. We are all fed by his generosity.
